Pico da Pedra is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, with an area of 6.56 km² and 2,909 inhabitants (2011). Its population density is 443.4 inhabitants km².

In the last census (2011) Pico da Pedra had 2,909 inhabitants, of which 1,440 were males and 1,469 were females.

The parish of Pico da Pedra is located in the interior of the north coast of the island of São Miguel, 2 km from the sea. It is 8 km from Ponta Delgada (Rotunda de Belém) and 10 km from the county seat, the city of Ribeira Grande. To the north and west it faces the parishes of Calhetas and Fenais da Luz; to the south, with Fajã de Cima, São Roque and Livramento; and to the east, with Rabo de Peixe.

It is not known for sure what originated the toponym "Pico da Pedra", although Dr. Urbano M. Dias in his "History of the Azores" (II), says that: "it derives from a stone in one of the hills of the parish". About this origin our first chronicler, Dr. Gaspar Frutuoso, tells us nothing, referring only to this locality when he speaks of men, who we believe to have been its first settlers, Bartolomeu Roiz and João Roiz to whose names he adds: "from Pico da Pedra". Both from the references of Frutuoso and from the will of Manuel Moniz, dated 1604, we can say that the toponym Pico da Pedra is from the sixteenth century.

We believe that it is not only due to the "stones" at the top of the mountain, but also to the amount of basaltic slag and lava flows existing in this locality, which certainly contributed a lot to its designation. - REF: 326/T/03540
